Esther Hutt Obituary

Esther Jean Boerman Hutt at long-last met her Jesus face to face on May 22, 2025, following an unexpected and rapid decline in health at the age of 83.

Esther was born on Dec. 21, 1941 in a cobblestone farmhouse on Eddy Ridge Road, Marion, the 3rd child of Abram and Nettie Boerman.  She was a lifelong resident of Marion, NY.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Peter Hutt; parents, Abram and Nettie Boerman; brothers, Roger and David Boerman and older sister, Elsie (Leonard) Poot; and is survived by her sister Martha (Rick) Donegan and Debbie (Ted) Krebbeks, as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.

She will be greatly missed by her four loving children, Wendy (Chris) Gordon, Bonnie (Eric) Pfeiffelman, Steven (Aryn) Hutt, Denise (Jeremy) DeFrehn; grandchildren Christopher Gordon, Wesley Gordon, Joash (Anna) Pfeiffelman, Jordan Pfeiffelman, Noah Pfeiffelman, Izzabella Reese, Matthew Lenhart, Romy Stoffel, Micah DeFrehn, Samuel DeFrehn, Hannah DeFrehn, and great-grandchild, Aiden Gordon.

Esther began her education in the first 1st grade class of East Palmyra Christian School in 1947.  She attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, and returned home to marry and begin a teaching career in Walworth Public School, Walworth, NY. In her later years when substitute teaching, she often taught the children of her first students.  She was a lifelong supporter of the East Palmyra Christian School, sending all her children there as well as returning to teach there for over 20 years, until retirement.  She proudly followed the lives of so many of her students as they grew and had families of their own.  Her service to the East Palmyra Christian School also included serving on the School Circle, the Education/Curriculum committee, as well as the EPCS School Board.

Esther and Peter were married in, and faithfully attended and served at, the East Palmyra Christian Reformed Church.  She canvassed for students and taught at VBS, played piano for the choir and was on a rotation to play the organ for Sunday services.  In later years she became the primary organist and took great joy in serving the church in that way.

Esther was a social person who loved being involved and traveling when possible.  She and Pete bravely took a trip to the Netherlands in 1998 to visit Pete’s childhood home and family despite the language barrier, and traveled to Korea to visit her daughter Denise who was teaching there. She also loved traveling to visit her children and caring for her grandchildren when help was needed.  She looked forward to traveling to FL in winter to visit family and walk on the beach.

She and Peter loved their home of 60 years on Parker Rd, Marion, but was ready to downsize to a new living situation last year, following Peter’s death.  She moved to a Villa at Parkwood Heights in Macedon and had been living her best life this past year, diving into the social schedule with its activities and game nights and made many new friends.  She organized and played for a monthly hymn sing, and co-led the Care & Share Bible Study.  In 2023 she took on the challenge of reviving the Marion Senior Citizens group, which had been started and supported for many years by her parents. In the absence of leadership, she took on both the president and treasurer roles, organizing new activities and presentations during meetings, as well as trips. When forced to step back last month she was very gratified to know that others had, stepped up to take on her roles and keep the group going.

Family and friends are invited to call from 10am - noon on Wednesday, May 28 at the East Palmyra Christian Reformed Church, 2057 E. Palmyra - Port Gibson Rd, Palmyra, NY 14522 where a funeral service will be held at noon. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
