PALMYRA – Levern Lee DeRuyter, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 6. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rosemary DeRuyter; brothers, Carl (Emily) DeRuyter and Bernard DeRuyter; children, Dennis Breed, Linda Breed, Fay (Gary) Williams, Karen (Ed) Nenno, Mary Ball, Linda (Alan) Hlavac, and Donna DeRuyter; special daughter-in-law, Billie Jo Wright; brother-in-law, Gerald (Patty) Crowley, sisters-in-law, Jean Terwilliger and Kathryn (David) MacDuff; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Ruth DeRuyter; sons, Terence and Thomas Breed; and brother-in-law, Robin Terwilliger.
Vern grew up in Phelps and graduated from the local high school in 1952. He was a skilled electrician who spent three decades working for the former American Can Co. in Fairport, followed by CDS in Rochester. He was a kind and generous man who enjoyed the simple things, like spending time with family and watching cooking shows. He loved animals, especially his cats, Rascal and Daisy.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 8 at the Robert L. Yost Funeral Home, 123 W. Main St., Palmyra. A graveside service will be held at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Palmyra at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to the Humane Society of Wayne County, 1475 County House Road, Lyons, NY 14489.
